Scott C. Kaestner

TREES

at lunch
staring
at trees

epiphany then
realizing
they’re alive

i mean i
knew that
but now
i’m feeling it

tall trunks
soaring
into blue sky

green leaves
whispering
in cool breeze

living things
hydrating
nutrient
seeking
beings
just
like
me

millions will
pass them by
not realizing
not feeling
this

but i do
i salute
their existence

and i too
have
strong roots

and i too
rejoice
on sunny days

and i too
strive
for the heavens

and i too
am
still here

  1. Amazing how a lunch in the park will help us relate to earth's elements. The simplicity of your words in relation to trees is breathtaking. Isn't it amazing how we can look at something we see everyday and then one day see it with a whole new perspective? Incredibly sensory Scott.

  2. yes you are here, they are there. They are Perfect Stillness! Think of how these little guys ever got here. Just like little wings from the heavens above. They are hear to teach us a few things. These guys are my best friends. Just think of what they do for us. They feed us, shade us, give us medicines for healing, lay down and give us a home. I can go on and on. Thank you for looking up and "seeing",

There is a rhythm and stillness in this poem.
Wonderful, too the awareness that the poet
ushers in. Trees are in our vision everyday
and we take them for granted. Not the poet who
is connected to them with feeling and being.
    Great poem, Scott!
